How water softeners work
A resin tank exchanges hardness minerals for sodium or potassium; a brine tank supplies the salt solution for regeneration. The control valve tracks time or volume and runs a backwash, brine draw, and rinse. A softener doesn’t remove every dissolved substance.
Not working right? Returning scale, unusual salt use, salty taste, low pressure, or resin in the plumbing can mean a bypass, setting, injector, valve, brine, or resin problem. Diagnosis comes before replacement.
Reverse osmosis for drinking water
An under-sink RO uses sediment and carbon prefilters, a membrane, a storage tank, a postfilter, a dedicated faucet, and a drain. RO reduces many dissolved substances — but no system is a blanket guarantee; certification, pressure, and maintenance matter.
Prefilters protect the membrane and need regular replacement; storage tanks can lose charge if neglected. RO may supply a refrigerator when pressure, tubing, and storage are suitable.
Point-of-entry vs. point-of-use.
Point-of-entry treatment serves most or all water entering the property — good for protecting plumbing and appliances. Point-of-use serves one location, like a drinking-water faucet. Some properties use both: sediment or carbon at entry, a softener for hardness, and RO at the kitchen. More equipment isn’t automatically better — every stage adds maintenance and pressure considerations.

A whole-house system must handle peak flow without unacceptable pressure loss. Filter size, media depth, valve rating, and hardness capacity all matter. Existing low pressure should be diagnosed first — every filter adds some resistance.
Ongoing maintenance
Sediment and carbon filters change on water quality and pressure drop — not just a calendar. Softeners need salt and occasional resin service; RO systems need compatible prefilters, membranes, and sanitizing.
